What Is Local SEO, and How Does It Work?

Local SEO is all about making your business visible to people in your specific area when they’re searching online. It’s the behind-the-scenes magic that helps your website—and your business—show up when someone nearby searches for what you offer, whether they’re on their phones in a café or browsing on a desktop at home.

One of the stars of local SEO is Google My Business (GMB). This free tool lets you manage how your business appears in Google Search and Map, making it easier for potential customers to discover essential information like your address, hours, and reviews. When optimised correctly, your GMB profile helps you stand out in local searches, ensuring you’re not just another name in the crowd.

Here’s what an effective local SEO strategy typically includes:

  • Optimising your Google My Business profile with up-to-date information and engaging photos
  • Gathering and responding to customer reviews to build trust and credibility
  • Ensuring your business details are consistent everywhere online
  • Targeting location-based keywords so you rank when customers search for services “near me”

In short, local SEO connects your business with your community online, bringing new customers right to your (virtual) doorstep—no matter where or how they’re searching.

What is holding you back

Want to see where you actually rank?

Leave your details and we will go through your profile properly, then send you:

  • A map grid scan showing your position across your suburbs, and the spots where you do not appear at all
  • Every issue we found, not just the top three
  • What to fix first, in order

Done by a person, not a robot. Back to you within one business day.

We need this to run the scan and check your site alongside the profile.

You Need to Rank in Every Suburb You Service

Perth metro runs more than 130km end to end. Google builds the map pack on proximity, so one address on your website will not put you in front of someone searching three suburbs away. Most local businesses only find this out after months of paying for rankings that never turned into calls.

Suburb by suburb

We map the suburbs you actually take jobs in, then build the pages and local signals that make you visible in each one. Real content per area — not one page with the suburb name swapped in and out.

Tracked where it counts

You see your position in each target suburb, not one city-wide average that hides the areas you are invisible in. If a suburb is not moving, you will know which one and why.

Real movement in 90 days

You will see measurable change across your target suburbs within 90 days, reported to you every month. No lock-in contract, so we have to keep earning it.

Tell us the suburbs you want the work to come from and we will show you where you currently sit in each one. Get your free local SEO audit.

Local SEO Expert, Consultant or Agency — What Do You Actually Need?

People search for this work under half a dozen different names, and the titles get used interchangeably. The job underneath is the same: get your business showing up when someone nearby is ready to buy. What changes is how much of it you want handled for you.

A local SEO consultant

Advice and direction, usually without the hands-on work. Good if you have someone in-house who can execute and you need to know what to execute. You get a plan, a priority order and someone to check the work against.

A local SEO specialist

Someone who does this and only this. They live in Google Business Profiles, map pack tracking, citations and review flow rather than splitting time across ads, social and design. Best when the local pack is where your leads come from.

A local SEO agency

A team rather than a person, so the technical fixes, the writing and the profile work happen in parallel instead of queued behind one calendar. Worth it once you are covering several suburbs or several services at the same time.

Local SEO services, unbundled

Sometimes you only need one piece — a profile rebuild, a citation clean-up, suburb pages written properly. Paying for a full retainer to fix one thing is wasteful. Ask for the piece you need.

We work as all four depending on what the business in front of us needs. If you are not sure which one you are after, the quickest way to find out is to see where you currently rank in the suburbs you want work from. Ask us for that breakdown and we will tell you honestly whether you need a full engagement or one afternoon of fixes.

Industries We Work With

Most of our work is with trades — the businesses that win or lose a job on whether they turn up when someone nearby searches. The job is the same underneath, but the searches, the competition and the way people choose are different in every trade.

Plumbers

Burst pipe, blocked drain, no hot water. These are urgent searches on a phone, and the first few businesses in the map pack get the call. Speed and proximity decide it.

Electricians

Split between emergency callouts and planned work like switchboards and rewires. They need different pages, because a person with no power is not researching the way a renovator is.

Painters

Quote-driven and heavily compared. Homeowners shortlist two or three local painters, so being visible in your suburbs and backed by recent reviews is what gets you on the list.

Landscaping and outdoor

Leads come from homeowners comparing local options for a project. We target the searches in the suburbs you actually service, so you get quotes worth quoting on.

Kitchen and bathroom renovations

Clients research heavily and start with “near me”. We build what puts you in front of homeowners planning a high-value job, not one browsing ideas.

Clinics and local services

Dental, allied health and similar. Patients choose from the first few clinics on Google Maps, so the profile and the review flow matter as much as the website.

Not on the list? Local SEO works much the same for almost any business that serves a local area. Tell us what you do and we will show you what it looks like for your trade.

What every package includes

  • Your own CRM — every lead captured and followed up (most agencies charge extra; ours is included)
  • AI chatbot + automations so after-hours enquiries never slip
  • AI-search (GEO) optimisation — so ChatGPT and Google AI recommend you
  • No lock-in contract · plain-English monthly report tied to leads
  • A real Perth team — rated 5.0 from 26 Google reviews — backed by AI execution
  • A one-off setup month: audit, tracking, keyword map, GBP optimisation
Every suburb page is genuinely local — real landmarks, local projects and suburb-specific proof, never a template with the name swapped. That is what gets them ranking instead of ignored by Google.

Why we are not the cheapest

A $500/mo package can only afford a few hours of templated work. The prices above buy the work rankings actually need: pages written for your suburbs and services, technical upkeep, review velocity, links, and the measurement that proves what turned into leads. SEO compounds — the real question is not the cheapest month, it is the cost per lead after six of them.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost in Perth?

Our packages run from $1,500 to $3,900+ per month ex GST depending on how many suburbs and keywords you compete for. Custom multi-location plans start at $6,000 +GST. No call required.

Which package do I need?

Core area, newer business: Ground Floor (10 suburbs). Growing across a region: Level Up (25). Competitive niche or wide coverage: Penthouse (50). Multiple locations: Skyline (100). Or book a free strategy session and we will map it for you.

Is there a lock-in contract?

No. Month to month after the setup month. We keep clients with results, not contracts.

What happens in the setup month?

Technical audit and fixes, tracking wired up (Search Console, analytics, call tracking), your keyword map, Google Business Profile optimisation, and the content plan for the months ahead.

Why do prices vary between SEO agencies?

Price follows work volume: pages written, links earned, suburbs covered and how competitive your industry is. Very cheap packages usually mean templated content and little real work.

Know what you would pay. Know what you would get.

No guesswork, no hard sell — just a clear plan for your suburbs and budget.

Whispers From Our Web Experts

Frequently Asked Questions

Regular SEO tries to rank your website for a search term anywhere. Local SEO tries to rank you for people searching near you — the results Google shows with a map, three business listings and a set of reviews above the normal blue links.

The mechanics are different. Standard SEO leans heavily on your pages and your backlinks. Local SEO also depends on your Google Business Profile, your proximity to the searcher, your review profile, and whether your business name, address and phone number match across the web. A business can rank well organically and still be invisible in the map pack, and the reverse happens just as often.

A local SEO specialist works on the three things Google uses to rank the map pack: relevance, distance and prominence. In practice that means running your Google Business Profile properly, building pages for the suburbs you service, keeping your business details consistent across directories, and getting a steady flow of reviews.

It is different work to general SEO. A specialist spends more time in your Google Business Profile than in your website, because for local searches that profile is usually doing more of the ranking than the site is. They should also be tracking your position suburb by suburb rather than reporting one city-wide average, because a Perth business can sit first in one suburb and nowhere three suburbs away.

The titles vary — specialist, consultant, agency, freelancer — but the job is the same. What matters is whether they can show you where you currently rank in each area you want work from, and what they intend to change.

For a business that earns its money within driving distance, yes. Someone searching “plumber near me” or “dentist Subiaco” is ready to call, and the businesses in the map pack get most of those calls. That is a very different visitor to someone reading a blog post.

Where it is not worth it: if you sell nationally with no local service area, if you rely entirely on referrals and have no capacity for more work, or if your Google Business Profile is unverified and you are not willing to fix it. Local SEO cannot create demand that is not there.

The honest test is whether people search for what you do plus a location. If they do, the work pays for itself. If they do not, spend the money elsewhere.

Map pack movement usually shows first. Fixing a neglected Google Business Profile — categories, services, photos, hours, a proper description — often shifts rankings within a few weeks because you are correcting information Google already holds about you.

Website rankings take longer. For a competitive Perth term, expect three to six months before positions settle, and longer if the site is new or has thin service pages. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is either targeting terms nobody searches or is about to do something you will regret.

Perth agencies typically run local SEO between roughly $800 and $3,000 a month, and the range reflects scope rather than quality alone. A single-location business chasing a handful of suburbs sits at the lower end. A multi-location or multi-service business competing across the metro area sits higher.

What matters more than the number is what the number buys. Ask any agency how many hours go into the work, who does it, and what you receive each month. Our package tiers are listed further up this page so you can see exactly what sits at each level before you speak to anyone.

Across Australia, ongoing SEO retainers generally fall between $1,000 and $5,000 a month, with local SEO for a single-location business at the lower end and national or e-commerce campaigns at the top. One-off audits usually run a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars depending on depth.

Cheap SEO exists at $300 to $500 a month, and at that price you are buying a few hours of someone’s time, usually spent on automated reports rather than actual work. It rarely moves anything. At the other extreme, large agencies charge enterprise rates that a small business does not need.

The useful question is not the monthly figure but the cost per enquiry it produces. A $2,000 retainer that brings in six qualified jobs is cheaper than a $600 one that brings none.

No, but it is changing shape. Google now answers many informational questions directly with AI Overviews, and tools like ChatGPT answer others before anyone reaches a website. That has reduced clicks on “what is” and “how do I” style searches.

Commercial local searches have been far less affected. When someone needs a plumber this afternoon, they still tap a business in the map pack and call it. AI is not booking the job for them.

What has changed is that being the source AI quotes now matters as much as ranking. That means clear, direct answers on your pages, accurate business information, and content that states facts plainly rather than burying them. The work overlaps heavily with good SEO — it is an addition to the job, not a replacement for it.

Look at a Google result for almost any local service in Perth. Above the first website link sits the map pack — three businesses with ratings, distance and a call button. Most people searching on a phone with intent to hire tap one of those three and never scroll further.

Your Google Business Profile is what decides whether you appear there. Your website supports it — Google cross-checks the two — but the profile is the asset doing the ranking. A strong website with a half-finished profile loses to a modest website with a well-run one.

Proximity is the biggest factor and you cannot change it. Someone searching in Joondalup will see Joondalup businesses. That is why a single business address rarely ranks across the whole metro area.

What you can influence is relevance and prominence. Pick the right primary category, list your services individually, keep your hours and contact details accurate, post regularly, and build genuine reviews that mention the work you do. On the website side, build a real page for each suburb you serve with specific content — jobs you have done there, landmarks, local details. A page that only swaps the suburb name in and out will not hold up.

Yes, and in more ways than most business owners expect. Review count and average rating both feed into how Google ranks you in the map pack. The text matters too — reviews that mention a service or a suburb help Google connect you to those searches.

Recency counts. Forty reviews from three years ago read as a business that has stopped asking. A steady trickle every month reads as one that is busy. Replying to reviews, including the critical ones, is worth the few minutes it takes — prospects read the replies as closely as the reviews.

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website — directories, industry bodies, local listings. NAP consistency means those details match everywhere they appear.

Citations carry less weight than they did a decade ago, but inconsistency still causes real damage. An old address on a directory, a disconnected phone number, or a listing under a previous business name gives Google conflicting signals about who and where you are. Cleaning up the major Australian directories is worth doing once and doing properly. Buying hundreds of low-quality listings is not.

A good portion of it, yes. Completing your Google Business Profile properly, adding every service, uploading real photos of your work, asking customers for reviews and replying to them — none of that requires an agency, and it is the highest-value work available to most businesses.

Where it gets harder is the technical side of the website, building suburb pages that actually rank, diagnosing why rankings dropped, and competing in categories where established players have years of head start. If you want to start on your own, do the profile work first and see how far it takes you. We are happy to point you in the right direction either way.
